The Richest Man in Metropolis is My Backer by Dream Searcher

Chapter 14

“Sorry. I came here in a hurry and didn’t manage to grab my phone,” I admitted.
“Ha, no problem! I haven’t even started the app yet. You can pay me once you’re home,” she replied generonty
I was honestly pretty surprised by that.
I gave her the address as she entered it into her car’s GPS. The car smoothly steered out of the parking lot and onto the
driveway.
Her phone rang after a while. She connected it to her Bluetooth earphones,
“Hello? Oh, yeah, I left. Mm–hmm. Just call your own driver!
“Why? Well, something happened! I didn’t have time to inform you, but trust me, you’ll love it once I tell you a home.
“For real, no cap. Anyway, can’t talk–driving! Byeee!”
I glanced at the rear–view mirror instinctively.
Was I hallucinating? A young, lean man stood by the roadside where we had just left.
The morning rays illuminated him, bringing warmth to his cool, collected demeanor. His presence seemed to purify the air and
silence the noise around him.
He looked almost ethereal.
He had his phone pressed to his ear. I couldn’t see his face clearly from this distance, but something about him felt familiar. Had I
seen him before?
Before I could figure anything out, the young woman hung up and giggled. “That was from my folks. They doubt I could be an
Uber driver, so here I am, proving them wrong!
I smiled silently.
I could tell from her personality–she had to be her family’s precious sweetheart, never denied love or care.
It was a far cry from my life. I was born into an elite family, but I never received any warmth or affection from my parents.

My mother had loved me, but she had been so consumed by her disastrous marriage and the divorce that most of the time.
Thus, I had ended up absorbing her grievances and resentment.
And the divorce... The way my parents had fought each other was stressful and ugly for any child.
Then my grandfather and mother passed away. The number of people who loved me dwindled even more. My father and his
new wife hated me. Life only got worse.
A deep sense of weary sadness welled up inside me. Just thinking back on what had happened last night made me feel even
worse.
What was there in life, anyway? Everything felt so meaningless.
The young woman’s voice suddenly broke through my thoughts. “Oh my God! Girl, you’re naturally beautiful! You’re not even
wearing makeup, and here you are, just... glowing! I’m soooo jealous!”
I gathered my thoughts and smiled. “Aww, aren’t you a sweet–talker?”

I was pretty sure she was trying to lighten my mood more than giving a genuine compliment.
I had had a rough night’s sleep! I probably looked awful.
“I wasn’t flattering you, sis,” she said suddenly, as if she had read my mind. “I’m being sincere! You’re really pretty. You must
have a pretty personality, too! That’s why ‘m giving you a lift!”
I was stunned into silence.
My instincts told me she was lying, but her face showed only innocence. There was no hint of ulterior motives in her. She was
sunny, guileless, refreshingly candid, and gregarious.
I was certain it was just flattery, but it didn’t make me dislike her. In fact, I found myself liking her even more.
How odd...

We arrived at my home. I collected the payment and handed her 65 dollars through the window. “Thank you for the ride.”
She smiled sweetly and took only 20 dollars. “This is enough for me.”
“Oh no, I insist you accept it all. Buy yourself a nice meal, okay?”
“Aww, thanks!” She laughed and took the bills. “Like I said, you’ve got a pretty personality as well!”
“Drive safely,” I said.
“Sure thing. See ya!”
I watched the Porsche disappear into the distance and felt a nagging suspicion.
This young woman had acted like she had known me before
