But I was sure I did not know the Kenways!
“You’re such a beauty, Miss Jones! A lively, shapely, brilliant young woman just from appearance alone.”
oh my
God. I thought I would receive a standard greeting, but instead, she showered me with affection almost immediately!
Everyone always said I was a beauty, and yes, whenever I looked in the mirror, I couldn’t help but wonder who that gorgeous
babe was...
But the Kenways must have seen all sorts of people with different kinds of beauty already! How could someone like me still elicit
praise?
Nah. She was just a good conversationalist, skilled at making others feel comfortable in a social situation.
Charles leaned closer to me and whispered, “Uh, Miss Jones? This is Madame Lisbeth Kenway.”
I immediately smiled and nodded. “Good morning, Madame Kenway. Thank you.”
“What a melodious voice!” she exclaimed.
Lfelt my cheeks burning. “I... I could say the same for you, ma’am. You’re incredibly youthful–looking, but I admire your
demeanor even more.”
She laughed. “Youthful? I’m turning 60 next month!”
Not once had Lisbeth put on airs. She was down–to–earth and cordial–different from the matriarchs I had imagined elite families
had.
As it turned out, Lisbeth was also very fashion–conscious. She disliked the style women her age were expected to adopt, so she
turned to me.
“I want to wear styles the youth are sporting without looking out of place. I don’t want people to think I’m trying too hard,” she
explained.
With her request in mind, I assessed the older woman’s exterior and her conduct, my mind starting to work.
I got it!
“Alright, I have an idea already. But first, I should take your measurements.‘
Lisbeth spread her arms, and I got to work.
Cherry recorded the measurements at the side.
A few other women were present as well, and I could hear their conversation as I worked. It wasn’t long before I realized they
were discussing marriage.
Not their own, to be fair, but Mr. S. Kenway’s–whose name I now knew was “Soren Kenway.”
“He’s not interested in any of them? None of these socialites or wealthy heiresses?”
“Nope. We’ve shown him the third batch by now, and he’s still not interested in any of them.”
“That’s Soren for you. He always has high standards. Why else would he have been single this long?”
Lisbeth sneered. “More like he’s already got a choice.”

“Frankly, these girls‘ beauty is too superficial, you know? They either look like they have no soul or have undergone god–knows–
how–many plastic surgeries. You can’t even tell what their real faces might have looked like!”
I finished taking Lisbeth’s measurements and, knowing the others wanted their own clothes, took theirs as well. I reminded
Cherry not to mess up the record.
Lisbeth returned to her seat and sipped her tea.
She considered me for a while before asking aloud, “You have an eye for beauty, right? Maybe you should help me choose.”
I turned to her, startled.
My eyes fell on the photos on the table, and I shook my head. “I can’t tell, ma’am. Besides... You can’t choose for someone else.
It has to be up to the person themselves.”
One of the women remarked, “You know what I think? None of these socialites are as good as Miss Jones anyway! They don’t
look as pretty as she is... or as talented.”
I was surprised. “Um, t–thank you! You flatter me! If I’m being honest, I don’t think I could even compare to these girls at all.”
“Don’t sell yourself short. You’re better than you think!”
Well... I was also a woman who had just been abandoned by my civic partner. How was I supposed to feel confident enough to
believe that?
To my shock, Lisbeth suddenly asked, “Are you seeing anyone already, Miss Jones?”
I nearly fell to the floor from bewilderment. I remembered what one of my managers had said yesterday... “That’s a lark, ma’am.
Everyone knows about my scandal by now. I’m sure you have, too,” I replied candidly.
