Chapter 1769
Chapter 1769: Did she have a choice? No.
[From: My Haines
There's an emergency, so I'm flying out tonight. I'm sorry, but I will be home as soon as possible. Sleep well tonight, Gracie.]
Grace pouted as she read Haines' message, sighing heavily with slight disappointment. She knew Haines had barely taken a break from work for his surgery. However, he still had to get involved if necessary.
"His surgery has been slightly delayed," she whispered. "Oh well. My man's a hardworking man."
Grace shrugged, reassuring herself that it was fine. This would also give her extra time for work. So, she quickly composed a reply to him.
[To: My Haines
You'd better make sure you come home as soon as possible. Otherwise, I'll be sad. I'll be here when you come back. Miss you already.]
After sending the message, she took a shallow breath and set her phone down. Grace reached for the file on the coffee table in her living room. She had spent the whole day working on Cassandra's case with Kiara and Cassandra. But something was still bothering her about the case.
She didn't know what it was, but a nagging feeling persisted. She decided to pinpoint the source of this gut feeling tonight. After all, if Haines were here, she wouldn't even bother and just toss it for the next day. Might as well take advantage of his absence to lessen her work once he comes back.
"Hmm..." she hummed, massaging her neck and stretching it from side to side. "Let's see."
Silence fell in the living area as Grace reviewed the files she had already read multiple times. Cassandra's trial was set, given its high-profile nature, which made it a top priority. So, it was moving faster than everyone else's.
Their defense strategy was straightforward: cast doubt on the prosecution's argument. It was sure to be a brutal court battle, particularly for Cassandra. The prosecution would undoubtedly dismantle every defense layer until Cassandra stood exposed before the world. There was nothing Grace could do about that, so she just had to make sure, even if it came to that, it wouldn't seal off Cassandra's fate.
"Wait a minute." Grace raised an eyebrow, cocking her head as she read through the case files, including Cassandra's recorded interview from her first day in custody.
She blinked repeatedly, rereading the conversation in the file.
"I noticed this before, but it's odd," she muttered. "Cassandra was arrested just a day after she called off her engagement with Jonathan Pierson. And the day she's leaving Anteca for good."
Grace was well aware of Cassandra and Jonathan's engagement and its subsequent cancellation. Now, thinking about it, something seemed off about this timeline. After Cassandra's arrest, the police questioned Jonathan Pierson. However, due to their canceled engagement, the police did not press him much.
There was nothing inherently strange about that, but...
"Doesn't he volunteer at the orphanage?" she murmured, rubbing her chin thoughtfully. "Hold on."
Grace set the file aside and delved into the Smith Family history, particularly focusing on Senator Smith's background. Before long, suspicion clouded Grace's expression. She sat there for a moment before pushing herself up, grabbing her jacket and keys.
She had a hunch about who might have tipped off the police about illegal activities at the orphanage. Now, she needed confirmation. As Grace opened the door, she was startled at the sight of someone standing outside.
"Oh, God-" She clutched her chest, eyes widening as she focused on the woman standing there. "Cassandra?"
Cassandra also flinched when the door suddenly opened before she could ring the bell. "Oh... Attorney."
"What are you doing here?" Grace furrowed her brow, glancing around. "Where's Kiara?"
"She's at home." Cassandra pressed her lips together, sighing softly. "I snuck out."
"You know it's risky being out alone, right?"
Cassandra nodded, fidgeting with her fingers. "I know, but... I thought... actually, I don't know what I thought. I just wanted to give her some time alone. She's not speaking to me yet, and I don't blame her. Since we started working on this case together, she's learning things about me that she never knew during our years together."
Grace crossed her arms, studying the woman who had been torn down since her arrest, and even before the trial.
"Once the trial starts, it will get worse, Cassandra," she warned. "Not just with Kiara, but the whole world will know-not just your good side. Even with your strengths, many people only focus on the negative aspects they know about you. It's going to be brutal."
Cassandra pressed her lips tightly, nodding. "I know that."

But despite everything, Cassandra
was determined to prove her innocence. This trial could clear her
name, or she might end up behind bars. Either way, the world would never see her the same way again.
And she had come to terms with that-it was better than being behind bars. The content is on

"Never mind that," Grace shook her
head, waving dismissively as she pushed the door wider. "Just Stay here for now. Hugo has already assigned people to protect Kiara, so she'll be fine alone. As for you, stay put. You might as well do some reading and extra work to bolster our
chances of winning this case." The content is on Novelxo.org! Read

Cassandra studied Grace from head to toe, her brow furrowing. "Where are you
going?"
"Well," Grace shrugged. "I need to confirm a few things. Since my boyfriend isn't
coming home, I'll use this time to do some extra work and have more free hours
with him once he returns."
"Oh." Cassandra blinked. "Are you going to...?"
"The orphanage." Grace rolled her eyes, reaching out to gently push Cassandra
inside. "Lock the door. I'll be back-"
"Wait!" Cassandra reached out, stopping Grace. "I'm coming."

Grace gave her a pointed look, and Cassandra's mouth twitched before she blurted out, "I know the people at
the orphanage. It's late, so the people there are not the ones managing it. But I know who knows about the management and where they live. Besides, the orphanage was shut
down since this case opened." The content is on Novelxo.org! Read

Grace's brow slowly arched, studying Cassandra's expression. "Lock the door.
Let's go."
